Immunotherapy

What is immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy, often called allergy shots, is the most effective treatment for airborne allergens. It’s often extremely effective for some of the most common allergens, including pollen, dust, and mold. Immunotherapy can also help with other allergic conditions such as allergic asthma, hay fever, and stinging insect allergies. Immunotherapy isn’t an option for food allergies.

During immunotherapy, you get a series of injections that build up your body’s allergen tolerance gradually. Over time, this dramatically reduces or stops your allergy symptoms.

How does immunotherapy work?

With immunotherapy, Dr. Sirven injects small amounts of each allergen. This triggers your body to create antibodies that prevent allergy symptoms. Eventually, allergen exposure won’t trigger allergic symptoms anymore. You can get immunotherapy for more than one allergen at a time if needed.

You visit Sirven & Associates Allergy and Asthma Center on a regular basis (at least once a week) to get your injections. Dr. Sirven increases your dosage gradually each week, which prevents you from experiencing allergy symptoms while still increasing your tolerance. Immunotherapy sessions are quick and usually painless because Dr. Sirven uses a slender needle.

How long does it take for immunotherapy to work?

Each patient’s allergens are different, but immunotherapy starts to work in as little as 4-6 months for many patients. For continued allergy protection, it’s important to keep up with your allergy shots even after you see the initial positive results. You need to complete the full course of immunotherapy for optimal long-term results, and that can take 3-5 years.

Is immunotherapy right for me?

Dr. Sirven assesses your case and discusses your needs with you to help you decide if immunotherapy is the best solution for your allergies. Immunotherapy is available for children as young as 5 and can be a great solution for adults of all ages.

If you're not getting the results you need with medication, or you're just tired of taking daily medication to control your allergies, immunotherapy could be right for you.

Remember that immunotherapy requires a time commitment. As long as you can keep up your regular visits to Sirven & Associates Allergy and Asthma Center, you can enjoy freedom from allergy symptoms through immunotherapy.
